Our California Therapy Specialties
Most practices treat the familiar list. Rowan therapists go deeper, in areas most therapists don’t train: health psychology for chronic illness and medical adjustment, rehabilitation psychology after injury or disability, and the psychological weight of significant medical and neurological conditions. We take therapy further.

See our approach →Our Evidence-Based Approach
What does evidence-based therapy actually look like in practice? Rowan therapists don’t default to a single modality. Your treatment draws from the approaches with the strongest evidence for your specific situation, not a one-size-fits-all protocol.

Learn more →Motivational Interviewing (MI)

What Our California Clients Say
Hear from people who found relief through therapy at Rowan Center.
I'll admit I was a skeptic. Eight years of fibromyalgia, every specialist in the book, and I expected therapy to be the soft option that wouldn't change anything physical. I was wrong about that. I won't pretend the pain is gone, but I understand my flare triggers now and I can get ahead of them. That has been worth a great deal to me.
J.M.
For twenty years I thought the stomach stuff and the racing heart were just me. Turns out it was anxiety this whole time. My mood has done a complete 180 and I'm finally sleeping through the night. My husband says I'm a different person.
R.S.
Got hit with depression after my diagnosis and figured I'd just have to live with it. I didn't. Tools that worked, not just talk. Big difference. Recommend.
D.C.
I figured bad sleep was just part of my personality at this point. Turns out there's an actual approach for it. Took a few weeks, but I sleep now, no meds. Kind of annoyed I waited so long.
A.T.
When my mom passed I really thought I was okay, I went back to work, kept busy, did all the things you're supposed to do. Then a few months later it all caught up with me at once. Talking it out here, really talking, not just venting, helped me stop running from it. I still miss her every day, but it doesn't knock me over anymore.
K.B.
Honestly the best decision I've made for myself in years!! I'd been to other therapists who just didn't get OCD. After maybe ten sessions here, the intrusive thoughts that used to run my whole day are so much quieter. I can't recommend this place enough.
M.L.
I'd carried something for a long time and never said it out loud to anyone. I finally did, here. It was not easy. I'm steadier now than I've been in years.
S.P.
Retiring hit me a lot harder than I ever expected. I ran a department for almost forty years and then one Monday I just... didn't. Felt useless, frankly, and the anxiety crept in from there. The work I did here helped me figure out who I am now, not who I was. I'm enjoying this chapter more than I thought I would.

Schedule a ConsultationFrequently Asked Questions About California Therapy
Is online therapy legal in California?
Yes. Licensed California therapists can legally provide telehealth to anyone physically located in California at the time of the session. All Rowan therapists hold active California licenses and use a HIPAA-compliant video platform. If you travel out of state, we pause sessions or coordinate with a licensed provider in that state.
Does Rowan Center accept my California insurance?
Rowan is in-network with Medicare (including SCAN Medicare Advantage), Aetna, Cigna, and First Health, and credentialed with TRICARE West as non-network providers. We also work with WA Worker’s Comp (L&I). For PPO plans we do not contract with, we provide a superbill for out-of-network reimbursement. HSA and FSA work for most services. We verify your benefits before your first session.
How much does therapy at Rowan cost?
Session rates depend on who you work with. Our licensed psychologists charge $275-$350 per individual session. Our postdoctoral psychological associates, through Affordable Therapy Services, are a flat $165. Couples and family sessions range from $190-$350 depending on provider. If you use insurance we are in-network with, your cost is whatever your plan sets, often a copay between $20 and $60 per session. Out-of-network PPO patients typically pay the full fee up front and get reimbursed through a superbill. We accept cash, check, credit/debit, and HSA cards.
Do I need a diagnosis to start therapy?
No. Many California clients come to Rowan without a formal diagnosis. Stress, life transitions, grief, or a new medical diagnosis all qualify as reasons to start. If insurance is billing, your therapist will identify an appropriate diagnostic code from your intake, but a diagnosis is a billing tool, not a gate to care.
How do I verify a therapist is licensed in California?
Look up any therapist’s name on the California Department of Consumer Affairs license search. Rowan’s California team includes doctoral psychologists licensed by the Board of Psychology and licensed therapists licensed by the Board of Behavioral Sciences. Each therapist’s license number is listed on their profile page.
What if my therapist is not the right fit?
Tell us. Fit is the strongest predictor of good outcomes, and we would rather match you with a better-fit therapist on our team than have you stop therapy. We can usually reschedule you with a new provider within a week. There is no charge to switch inside the practice.
Is Rowan accepting new California patients?
Yes. Our California team has openings for new patients most weeks, online and in-person at our Burbank office. A free 15-minute consultation is the fastest way to check fit and get scheduled. If we are full in a specialty, we refer you to a vetted California therapist outside our practice.
How private and secure is online therapy with Rowan?
Every session runs on a secure, HIPAA-compliant, encrypted video platform. Your clinical notes live in an encrypted, HIPAA-compliant electronic health record. We never share your information with employers, schools, or family members without your written consent.
What is the difference between online and in-person therapy at Rowan?
Clinically, the research is clear: for most presentations, video therapy works as well as in-person. The difference is logistical. Online means no commute, easier weekly consistency, and the ability to meet from anywhere in California. In-person at our Burbank office gives you a dedicated therapy space away from home. Some people do a mix. You choose, and you can switch.
Do I need to live near Burbank to work with Rowan?
No. We see people by telehealth from Eureka to San Diego and everywhere between. Our Burbank office is available if you are in the greater Los Angeles area and want in-person care, but it is optional. Most of the people we work with never step into the office.
What specialties do you offer for California residents?
Health psychology, rehabilitation psychology, anxiety, depression, trauma and PTSD, ADHD, brain injury, chronic illness adjustment, couples and family therapy, and teen and adolescent therapy. Each has a dedicated team and a detailed page explaining our approach.
How quickly can I get a first appointment?
Most California clients book a first consultation within three to five business days. For active crisis or safety concerns, call 988 (Suicide and Crisis Lifeline) or go to your nearest emergency room, then reach out to us for ongoing care.
